Mixed-Use Place Branding & Spatial Experience Development

Urban Grove is a mixed-use place branding and spatial experience project that redefines everyday urban life through the concept of an urban resort. In contemporary cities, people seek spaces that provide meaningful moments of relaxation, connection, and personal experience beyond simple commercial functions. Urban Grove was developed as a destination-oriented environment where nature, community, lifestyle, and retail experiences are integrated into a cohesive spatial journey. Ahn&Partners established the place identity, experience strategy, and creative direction to transform a conventional commercial environment into a memorable urban destination. Through integrated design management across architecture, landscape, and experiential elements, Urban Grove creates a new model of urban leisure where people can discover rest, inspiration, and connection within their daily lives.

Urban Grove was developed from the question of what contemporary people truly need beyond their homes and workplaces — spaces that provide meaningful experiences, relaxation, and connection in everyday life. Rather than functioning as a conventional commercial environment, Urban Grove was conceived as an urban retreat where daily necessities, leisure, nature, and community experiences are integrated into a cohesive spatial journey. Inspired by the atmosphere of a small urban forest, the project establishes a nature-based spatial identity that allows visitors to escape the stress of everyday life and rediscover moments of rest, inspiration, and connection. Through the integration of place branding, spatial experience strategy, and creative design management, Urban Grove creates a new model of urban lifestyle space where shopping, walking, and relaxation coexist.

While many commercial complexes in Korea have adopted themed environments inspired by overseas destinations, Urban Grove takes a different approach by focusing on the experiences that contemporary urban users truly need. Rather than reproducing an exotic place, Urban Grove was developed through a user-centered experience design approach, creating a small urban sanctuary where people can escape the intensity of city life and reconnect with nature. The project reinterprets the garden experience as a contemporary form of urban relaxation, integrating landscape, spatial atmosphere, and everyday activities into a cohesive environment. Beyond visual attraction, Urban Grove aims to provide meaningful experiences through walking, resting, discovering, and connecting — transforming a commercial space into a memorable urban destination.

For pedestrians, Urban Grove establishes a spatial hierarchy through a network of pathways inspired by urban streets, including Boulevard, Avenue, Road, and Alley.

Rather than creating a simple circulation system, the project was designed as an intuitive experience journey where visitors can naturally explore, discover, and reconnect within the central courtyard without losing their sense of direction.

A dedicated pedestrian route was also developed to connect with surrounding residential communities, extending Urban Grove beyond a commercial destination into a shared neighborhood experience.

For visitors arriving by vehicle, the central sunken courtyard pavilion transforms the underground arrival experience by introducing natural light, fresh air, and seasonal elements such as sunlight, rain, and snow, creating a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor environments.

Commercial facilities in newly developed cities require more than functional infrastructure; they need distinctive identities and meaningful places that contribute to the character of the city.

Many themed shopping complexes attempt to attract visitors by replicating famous overseas destinations. However, places built upon borrowed images often lose their relevance over time, especially when compared with the authenticity of the original locations.

Urban Grove was developed from the belief that every place has its own unique identity and potential. Rather than imitating another destination, the project creates an original urban experience by integrating nature, community, lifestyle, and everyday activities into a memorable environment.

Through a user-centered experience strategy and place branding approach, Urban Grove transforms a commercial facility into a destination where people can naturally gather, explore, and create lasting memories.
